The Initial Four Android Settings I Adjust After a Factory Reset

Have you ever realized that a factory reset on your smartphone often leaves some things out? It’s a common experience. After performing a reset, I don’t rush to reinstall apps or restore data. Instead, I take a few moments to tailor the settings, making the phone feel like it truly belongs to me. A factory reset is intended to provide a clean slate; why bring back the disorganization and defaults you were trying to escape from?
Next time you reset your Android device, consider making these adjustments to ensure your phone feels unique and personalized.
First Step: Modify Navigation
Swiping Instead of Tapping
To start, I change how I navigate my phone. The traditional three-button navigation bar has never appealed to me, especially with the option of swiping. So, the first adjustment I make is to enable gesture navigation.
Using gesture navigation allows me to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to return Home, eliminating the need to search for the Home button. Additionally, a simple swipe and hold shows my recent apps. While reading, swiping inward from either edge of the screen helps me go back easily, which is terrific when I’m using my phone with one hand. Once you become accustomed to swiping rather than reaching for buttons, those gestures feel far more intuitive.
I encourage you to try gestures; they might just help you forget about the three buttons.
Maximizing the Back-Button Functionality
Two Taps for Quick Actions
The next setting I adjust is one that surprises me that it’s not enabled by default, especially by Samsung. This is the Back-Tap functionality. On my Galaxy Z Fold 6, tapping the back of the phone serves as a convenient shortcut. For example, I can double-tap it to take screenshots, which I do frequently throughout the day, rather than fumbling to press the Power and Volume Down buttons. A triple tap can be assigned to open an app or perform another task.
This feature is found via the RegiStar module in Good Lock: I simply access Good Lock, install RegiStar, select Back-Tap action, and turn it on. I usually assign the double-tap for screenshots since it’s something I use often. But you can choose whatever function suits your routine. Once you start using this invisible button for regular tasks, reaching for menus will seem unnecessarily slow.
Keeping Track of Notifications
One Tap Keeps Them Accessible
After a factory reset, my phone often floods me with notifications about freshly installed apps, updates, messages, and more. As my notification panel fills, I sometimes swipe them away without realizing that crucial messages might get lost in the shuffle.
This is where enabling Notification History becomes invaluable. It saves a log of notifications I’ve dismissed, letting me check if I missed an important message or email. To activate this feature on most Android phones, start at Settings -> Notifications -> Advanced settings -> Notification History to turn it on. This way, I don’t have to rely on memory or hope that a notification resurfaces after being hurriedly dismissed.
Though small, this feature is a safety net that allows me to recover important notifications anytime.
Increasing Screen On Time
Exploring Longer Timeout Durations
For me, a 30-second screen timeout can sometimes be too brief. Constantly reading articles or following recipes, I don’t always touch my phone, leading to the screen going dark at inopportune moments. I prefer to extend the timeout to avoid constantly waking my device.
I navigate to Settings -> Display -> find “Screen timeout,” and set it to 10 minutes. If you have different needs, feel free to select a shorter duration. There’s also an additional option called Keep screen on while viewing, which uses the front camera to detect your gaze and prevent the screen from turning off when you’re engaged. However, be mindful that this feature might not be available across all devices or software versions.
You’ll quickly see how beneficial these modifications are when they’re missing.
Customizing My Fresh Start
A factory reset offers a clean beginning, but I don’t stop there. Spending a few extra moments adjusting settings I know I’ll use daily makes a significant difference. So, the next time you reset your Android phone, take the time to tweak these settings before restoring everything. Your future self is sure to appreciate it.
