Mercedes Introduces Three Competing AI Assistants in the All-New C-Class for Enhanced Interaction

In June 2023, Mercedes-Benz and Microsoft initiated a three-month beta program featuring ChatGPT in the automaker’s MBUX Voice Assistant. Previously, this assistant only operated with a restricted set of pre-defined commands that drivers needed to memorize and replicate almost verbatim to extract a response.

ChatGPT enhanced the MBUX assistant’s functionality, enabling it to comprehend natural, open-ended queries. This development allowed drivers to engage in more conversational interactions with their vehicles rather than merely fitting their input into specific pre-set commands.

Mercedes-Benz touted this innovation as a significant advancement in in-car voice control. Fast forward three years, and the company is making an even bolder move. The upcoming C-Class, set to debut in U.S. dealerships in the first half of 2027, will integrate three AI systems working simultaneously, rather than relying on a single AI.

Three AI Models, One Assistant

The System Chooses the Right AI

This new arrangement is termed a multi-agent approach by Mercedes-Benz. Rather than opting for one AI provider, the new MBUX Virtual Assistant harnesses technologies from ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini concurrently. It intelligently selects the most suitable source based on the question asked. According to Mercedes-Benz, drivers can inquire about various topics, including weather forecasts, ski conditions, and stock market updates, with MBUX retrieving the most relevant information.

For navigation, Mercedes-Benz has teamed up with Google Cloud to develop its Automotive AI Agent, tailored for location-based queries during travels. Drivers can ask for nearby coffee shops or gas stations as they approach an exit, or check how busy a restaurant usually is at noon. This agent utilizes data from Google Maps, which boasts coverage of 250 million locations and receives over 100 million daily updates. In the 2027 C-Class, both the navigation system and voice assistant function alongside one another, each tackling the questions they are best equipped to handle.

ChatGPT, Bing, and Gemini operate from servers outside the vehicle, meaning all inquiries made to the MBUX Virtual Assistant are transmitted over the car’s integrated cellular connection. To use the system, drivers must first link their vehicle to a Mercedes me ID account—the same credentials connected to the automaker’s app and Digital Extras store—so the system can identify the owner and the car in use.

If there’s no active data plan or if the vehicle is in a region without cellular signal, the C-Class defaults to a limited set of offline voice commands.

The Mechanics Driving the AI Systems

Revamped Engine and Enhanced Quietness

An effective AI assistant is only as capable as the vehicle it’s integrated into, and the 2027 C-Class is engineered to support its new technological features. The car features an enhanced version of the existing 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, known as the M 254 EVO, now combined with a second-generation mild-hybrid system that adds an extra 23 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque at lower speeds. This setup operates on a 48-volt electrical system for coasting and energy recovery, while a new electric auxiliary compressor mitigates turbo lag by activating in milliseconds.

This powertrain generates a total of 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, with an overboost setting that provides an additional 27 horsepower for brief periods. Mercedes engineers have also refined the 2027 C-Class suspension for improved handling by using a four-link arrangement in the front and a five-link setup in the rear for refined wheel control.

Improving cabin acoustics also required significant engineering efforts. The new C-Class boasts a drag coefficient as low as 0.24, supported by redesigned side mirrors optimized to minimize wind noise. Features such as the trunk lid design, which includes a built-in spoiler contour, and tailored separation edges on the taillights help reduce airflow turbulence. Additional seals surround the windshield to further limit wind noise.

Moreover, the exhaust system is mounted using a cage-style setup instead of a conventional one, minimizing vibrations that reach the interior. Coupled with upgraded sound insulation, Mercedes-Benz claims the cabin remains serene even at high speeds.

Ambient Lighting and Wireless Updates

Inside the 2027 C-Class, drivers will find a 12.3-inch instrument display paired with an 11.9-inch touchscreen, providing comprehensive vehicle information and functionality. The optional Burmester 3D Surround Sound system includes 15 speakers, a 710-watt amplifier, and Dolby Atmos features that can adjust across ten levels of spatial depth. The refreshed ambient lighting system offers over 60 color options across ten themes, with four independent dimming zones and five brightness settings.

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz has introduced two new exterior color options for the 2027 C-Class—Miami Silver Metallic and Moody Sky Grey Metallic. Interior choices include Beech Brown and Cherry Red upholstery, with a new AMG Line Plus trim for a sportier aesthetic without transitioning to a full AMG model. The 2027 C-Class is expected to hit U.S. showrooms in early 2027, with no specific pricing announced yet, though the previous 2026 C-Class starts at $49,650 for the C 300 sedan before any options. The company noted that the new model will support over-the-air updates to keep the vehicle features fresh and up to date for owners.
