Is Your iPhone Compatible with the Apple Pencil?

Traditionally, the Apple Pencil has been an accessory only for iPads, with no support for Macs or iPhones. However, this has changed with the launch of the iPhone Duo, which features new hardware and software capabilities.

Now, users can utilize the Apple Pencil with the iPhone, but this is contingent upon purchasing the high-end iPhone Duo. Although the Duo accommodates the Apple Pencil, there are notable limitations. Not every model of the Apple Pencil is supported, and specific software will be needed. This marks a significant shift, considering Apple once claimed that a stylus was not an ideal input method.

Unfortunately, the Apple Pencil won’t be functional with the iPhone Duo right at launch. While Apple has released limited information, it’s expected that an iOS update will be necessary for Apple Pencil support, which could come later this year. The iPhone Duo is projected to ship with iOS 27.1 in October, making iOS 27.2, expected in November, the likely update for this feature.

Moreover, only the Apple Pencil USB-C model is compatible with the iPhone Duo. Users of the Apple Pencil 2 or Apple Pencil Pro will need to purchase the compatible stylus for an additional $79. Apple has not elaborated on why this is the case, but it’s inferred that the absence of magnets in the iPhone for attachment and charging is a factor. For compatible iPads, the Pencil can be charged magnetically by attaching it to the device, whereas for the iPhone Duo, connection and charging must be done via a USB-C cable.

The positive aspect is that the Apple Pencil can be used on both displays of the iPhone Duo: the larger screen when it’s unfolded and the smaller outer screen. This functionality is beneficial for quick notes as well as detailed handwriting or drawing activities. While carrying the larger Apple Pencil may be cumbersome, the feature is beneficial for those who seek it.

It is important to note that other iPhone models do not support the Apple Pencil.
