Meta Is Allegedly Preparing to Unveil Innovative Smart Glasses Omitted of Camera Features

The company aims to attract new users amidst ongoing privacy issues with existing models.
Meta is set to launch a new model of smart glasses without a camera, targeting a release as early as this October. According to reports, the new design, named Luna, is expected to be introduced during the upcoming Connect developer conference on September 23 and 24. Luna will feature two variations: Clubmaster and Burbank.
Despite lacking a camera, these smart glasses will be equipped with six integrated microphones and speakers oriented towards the user’s ears, enabling interaction with Meta’s AI chatbot. The omission of a camera is intended to address privacy concerns, particularly around allegations of the current models being invasive. Additionally, Luna will be designed with slimmer temples, resembling typical eyewear more closely. There will be a button on the side for quick access to Meta AI.
Although Meta’s previous glasses have seen decent sales, the company has faced significant criticism over privacy issues, with fears that the devices might be misused for harassment or covert recording. The current models have an anti-creep feature that includes blinking LED lights while recording; however, previous tampering concerns prompted updates to strengthen this feature. Last month, adjustments were made to close loopholes that allowed users to record without the LED indicator functioning properly.
Despite the improvements, the negative reputation of Meta’s glasses might still deter potential buyers. It is believed that the introduction of Luna might persuade cautious consumers to reconsider making a purchase.
