Successful Evening for Widow’s Bay and The Pitt

Apple TV celebrated another achievement with Widow’s Bay, a horror comedy crafted by Katie Dippold, which garnered six Emmy awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Matthew Rhys won for Outstanding Lead Actor, while Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root were recognized as Supporting Actress and Actor in a Comedy Series, respectively. The series also took home awards for Directing and Writing.

In total, Widow’s Bay claimed 14 awards out of 19 nominations during both the Primetime and Creative Arts ceremonies, setting a new benchmark for a single season of a comedy series, exceeding the previous record of 13 held by The Studio.

Since 2021, Apple TV has established itself as a leader in comedy categories, with three of its series—Ted Lasso, The Studio, and now Widow’s Bay—winning four of the last six awards for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Notably, Matthew Rhys also won Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his performance in Netflix’s The Beast in Me, making him the first actor to win two leading acting awards in the same year. He is now the only performer to secure victories in all three lead acting categories, having previously won for his role in The Americans.

Jean Smart achieved a remarkable feat, winning her fifth Emmy for her role as Deborah Vance in Hacks. She is now the first performer to claim an Emmy for every season of a single show, bringing her career total to eight, a record she shares with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman.

The Pitt secured the Outstanding Drama Series award along with Lead Actor for Noah Wyle. However, it missed out on expected wins in the supporting categories, with Allison Janney and Tom Pelphrey recognized for their performances in The Diplomat and Task, respectively.

In contrast to its successful first season that won eight Emmys in 2023, Beef struggled this time, receiving only three awards from 16 nominations, with none in the major categories.

The final season of Hacks was overshadowed by the victory of Widow’s Bay, with Smart’s win being the only highlight for the series, which nabbed only two Emmys despite receiving 24 nominations.
