I Untangled My Cable Chaos for Just 5 Cents with a 3D Print Solution!

Managing cables can be a tedious task, especially when it comes to organizing a jumble of loose cords. While options like rubber bands and Velcro straps exist, I’ve discovered that the most effective solution is a straightforward 3D-printed design.

My collection of cables may mirror yours. Even though I bought my first Android phone with USB-C almost a decade ago, I still have far more microUSB cables. My assortment extends beyond phone chargers to HDMI cables, laptop power adapters, and various proprietary cables. Clearly, I needed to reevaluate how I store them.

The Limitations of Rubber Bands and Velcro Straps

Functional but Not Ideal

Before my recent attempt to organize, I relied on rubber bands and Velcro straps to manage my cables. Initially, this method appeared to work, as the materials were inexpensive and easy to use, resulting in a tidy look.

However, that neatness was short-lived.

Since I frequently access my box of cables, the shortcomings of rubber bands and Velcro straps became evident. Rubber bands tend to get tangled around multiple loops, either resulting in a knot or snapping completely, which complicates reuse.

While Velcro straps can be removed easily, reattaching them can be cumbersome, much like rubber bands. It’s one thing to dedicate time to organizing a box, but quite another to do so in the middle of a project. Wrapping cables securely with rubber bands or straps is not a seamless process.

I’m aware that some may view this as a trivial problem, but these minor annoyances can ultimately dictate the state of your workspace. The more difficult it was to secure cables, the messier my box became, leading to an entanglement of cords whenever I pulled one out.

Fortunately, I have access to a 3D printer.

A Simple and Efficient Alternative

How to Enhance an Already Simple Solution

While rubber bands and Velcro straps are simple solutions, I was looking for something better. To explore options, I turned to Maker World to see what others had devised.

One popular design I noticed was a flexible clip with a clasp, which allows a user to wrap a cable and secure it in place. I found this concept intriguing but worried about its durability over time and the potential wear on the clasp.

Another approach included a two-part ratcheting clip made from two nesting U-shapes that lock together. While clever, I felt that having two separate pieces made it easy to misplace one.

The most common design I encountered was an elongated S or C shape. Users would wrap cables and insert the ends into the slot designed for storage. Although I found this concept appealing enough to print a few, it ended up being more cumbersome than using a rubber band.

However, the last idea sparked my creativity. I took some measurements and created a peanut-shaped cable “strap.”

This design allows for quick application in one smooth motion. There’s no need for stretching a rubber band, wrapping a Velcro strap, or fumbling with clasps or inserts. You can simply gather the cable and slide on the strap, making removal equally effortless.

Although I’m not the first to come up with such a concept (similar designs exist on Maker World), my version is optimized for minimal filament use and quick printing. Ultimately, it suits my needs perfectly, highlighting the advantages of 3D printing.
