Stability AI Secures $76 Million in New Funding for Innovative Image Generator Stable Diffusion

Stability AI, the creator of the AI image generator Stable Diffusion, has successfully secured $76 million in a Series B funding round. This latest round brings the company’s total fundraising to $232 million.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, revealing that significant contributions came from major players in the entertainment sector, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Electronic Arts (EA). Investment firms AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures also participated in this funding round.
The composition of the investors is notable and diverges from the typical format of venture capital rounds, reflecting the companies with which Stability is now engaging for content licensing and distribution.
Prem Akkaraju, the CEO of Stability AI who took on the role in 2024, described the funding as a validation of the company’s vision, which centers on empowering producers, musicians, and storytellers through generative AI.
The newly acquired funds will be utilized to enhance Stability’s “creative production” suite and to expand its offerings in professional services. The company currently provides a diverse range of AI models aimed at generating music, videos, and images.
Founded in 2019, Stability AI has spent the past year forging partnerships to integrate generative AI into creative processes within entertainment companies. Notable collaborations include those with Universal Music and EA, which were established in October and the following November, respectively. These partnerships aim to co-develop Stability’s AI tools rather than simply licensing their outputs.
The company has also largely succeeded in its legal battles, particularly in a copyright case brought against it by Getty Images in the UK, which accused Stability of infringing on intellectual property rights through the use of their images for training its model. A judge ruled favorably for Stability in that instance, although another lawsuit from Getty in the U.S. is still pending.
In a separate legal issue, Stability AI was sued in 2023 by co-founder Cyrus Hodes, who alleged that he was deceived by fellow co-founder Emad Mostaque into selling his stake in the company.
