Grand Theft Auto VI Expected to Demand a Whopping 210GB Download Size

Prepare to allocate ample space on your gaming console’s hard drive.
Rockstar Games has been transparent about the expansive nature of Grand Theft Auto VI, so it’s no surprise it will come with a hefty download size. Reports from a dataminer known as “PlayStation Game Size,” supported by insights from Insider Gaming, indicate that the much-anticipated open-world title will require a download of 210GB on the PlayStation 5. It remains unclear whether this number reflects the total storage needed for installation (as installation files can temporarily occupy space) or just the game itself, but either way, it’s substantial.
For comparison, this download size exceeds the 149GB required for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 back in 2018, according to IGN. Moreover, it represents over half of the available storage on a standard 512GB Xbox Series S, which has approximately 362GB of usable space. As Insider Gaming highlights, if a day-one patch is issued, you may find yourself spending a considerable amount of your first day with GTA VI simply downloading essential files to get it running.

This trend is typical for high-profile video games, as advancements in graphics and the prevalence of online multiplayer modes and expansive worlds have contributed to growing game sizes. While developers have made strides to reduce these sizes—such as Activision separating Warzone from its yearly Call of Duty installments—the dilemma persists. If you’re planning to dive into GTA VI upon its release, it would be wise to free up some storage and opt for preloading the game. According to PlayStation Game Size, preloading will commence on November 12, just ahead of the game’s official launch on November 19.
