The newest beta iteration of the Android Auto application (version 17.6.663424) introduces numerous features. Among these, there are updates to weather animations and Quick Settings tiles, in addition to a redesigned user interface for Google Maps.
Currently, the interface for Google Maps uses a light background, with the turn indicator depicted in teal in the upper right corner. This can be visually striking on large infotainment displays, prompting Google to test a more subdued dark background for the map surface along with a dark gray color for the turn indicator.
These updates may also be implemented in dark mode. Google appears to be exploring a significantly darker interface for the map’s background, along with a dark gray turn indicator.
Presently, the turn indicator remains teal in dark mode, which contrasts with the overall aesthetic. Adjusting this could enhance visibility during nighttime driving, given the current light map tone isn’t user-friendly for nighttime navigation.
While Google frequently conducts A/B testing for various UI components and color palettes, this particular adjustment has left some confusion. Instead of appearing through the Google Maps app on the user’s smartphone, the updated darker map style seems restricted to Android Auto.
It remains unclear if this change is an intentional update from Google or an unintended glitch in the current Android Auto beta version. We will continue monitoring any modifications to the map’s display in forthcoming updates and share any new findings as they develop.
