Unveiling the Mystery: The Reasons Behind Blurred Locations on Google Maps

Enhance your privacy by opting to obscure your home on Google Maps Street View.
In today’s digital landscape, certain locations on Google Maps’ Street View feature are blurred for various reasons. Once a place has been obscured, it cannot be restored to its original view. So, what prompts this blurring, and how does it function?
Reasons Behind Blurred Images on Google Maps Street View
Google employs blurring techniques to protect the identity of sensitive locations and individuals, responding to requests from various sources including government agencies, privacy advocates, and users themselves. The common types of locations that are obscured include:
- Military installations and other high-security government sites, which are often censored across different Google services.
- Residences belonging to affluent individuals, celebrities, and other prominent figures.
- Individuals advocating for privacy rights.
- Instances where blurring was mistakenly applied to unrelated addresses.
In several countries, like the Netherlands and Germany, residents are legally entitled to request their homes be obscured, explaining the high number of blurred properties in those regions.
Google Street View provides detailed imagery that reveals information about properties—such as layout, value, and security features—which can be useful for police, criminals, investigators, and reporters. By blurring this data, users can minimize their online footprint and enhance their privacy.
Requesting Google to Blur Your Home
Google’s Street View automatically blurs faces and license plates using advanced tools. If these tools miss anything, you can submit a request for removal, including for your home. Here’s how you can ask Google to blur your residence:
- Open Google Maps and drag the pegman to your desired location.
- Locate the property on Street View once it opens.
- Click on the three dots in the top-left corner or the “Report a problem” link at the bottom right of the screen.
- Adjust the image to focus on the home or object you wish to obscure.
- Select what you would like to be blurred.
- Provide your email address for verification of your request.
- Complete the reCAPTCHA challenge.
- You may need to supply proof of ownership or tenancy of the property.
Is It Possible to Revert Blurring on Google Maps Street View?
Once Google applies a blur to a location, there’s no option to remove it. This permanent measure means that while obscuring your property can enhance security, it should be considered carefully. Not only does this affect neighbors’ ability to view the entire street, but potential future owners will also be unable to see the property.
Moreover, an intriguing point arises: a blurred property might attract burglars because the obscured view suggests valuable items or individuals might be present inside.
Blurring Locations on Other Mapping Platforms
Regardless of your stance on the blurring debate, it is essential to note that obscuring an address on Google Maps does not affect its visibility on other mapping services. To request a blur on Apple Maps, users should email MapsImageCollection@apple.com with their name, address, and specific request details. Other platforms, such as Baidu Maps, Mapillary, and Karta View, may also provide similar services for street-level imagery. Notably, Microsoft has phased out its Streetside imagery on Bing Maps as part of its transition to Azure Maps.
