Summary

  • An unofficial new tool enables Quick Share functionality on jailbroken Kindle devices.
  • Kindshare allows wireless file transfers from Android phones, but sending files back from the Kindle is not supported.
  • The setup process is quite technical, with varying compatibility based on the Kindle’s model and firmware version.

Last year, Quick Share expanded beyond its original Android platform to become compatible with Apple’s AirDrop. Now, this technology is accessible on an unexpected device: jailbroken Kindles, thanks to an unofficial project that allows direct file transfers from Android phones.

According to a report from Hackaday, developer unrealJune has introduced Kindshare, an open-source initiative that implements Quick Share reception on select Kindle models. Once configured, these Kindles can be selected as destinations for file transfers over wireless connections.

However, users should be aware of some significant limitations and a need for technical expertise. To get started, one must possess a Kindle that can be jailbroken, along with the appropriate firmware version. Additionally, utilizing tools like KOReader and setting up Kindshare requires some advanced computer skills. The developer has confirmed successful installation on a Kindle Voyage with firmware version 5.13.6, but other models may not work seamlessly.

Currently, Kindshare can only receive files; users can send data to the Kindle, but not vice versa. Moreover, incoming transfers are processed automatically, which raises potential security concerns. A convenient feature of Kindshare is that the Kindle can establish its own Wi-Fi access point when no other network is available, allowing your phone to connect for file sharing. It’s important to keep the Kindle active during this process, as its Wi-Fi function disables when the device is asleep.

This level of technical engagement may not appeal to the average e-reader user, but for those who like to delve into such intricate projects, the ability to transfer files directly from an Android phone is a valuable enhancement.
