Xbox Cloud Gaming offers a seamless way to enjoy Xbox games on smart TVs without needing a console. However, what if you don’t have a controller readily available? Microsoft is addressing this by allowing smartphones to be used as Xbox controllers.

The company has unveiled two new previews for Xbox Cloud Gaming. The first feature enables Android and iOS phones to serve as makeshift controllers on compatible smart TVs. Users can connect by scanning a QR code displayed on their TV, and the controls will open in the phone’s web browser—no app download required. Some games will also offer customized control layouts based on their gameplay mechanics.

To utilize this feature, access the Xbox app on your smart TV, navigate to Settings > Account, and enable “Preview Features.” If you launch a game without a physical controller, an option will appear to use your phone instead. This preview is available in regions that support Xbox Cloud Gaming, but a compatible smart TV is required. A list of supported models can be found on the Xbox support page.

Cloud Connect for Xbox Nano Controller

The second preview is specifically designed for users who already possess a controller, particularly Microsoft’s new $49.99 Xbox Nano Controller. Those in the US can now test out cloud connect, allowing the controller to connect directly to cloud servers via Wi-Fi instead of going through Bluetooth. Microsoft indicates this could decrease input lag and enhance game responsiveness.

Setting up this feature involves using the Xbox beta app on Android or the Xbox Accessories app on PC to link your Xbox Nano Controller to Wi-Fi. Then, log into a compatible Xbox Cloud Gaming experience with the same Xbox account. Note that using the app on PC requires enrollment in the Xbox Insider program. Currently, cloud connect is only available for smart TVs and web use, and it may not work with all cloud gaming scenarios. Detailed setup instructions can be found on the Xbox support website.

Both features are in a testing phase, meaning Microsoft is still evaluating them and users may encounter some issues. It’s uncertain when or if these features will become widely available.
