Key Points:

  • Super Mario Galaxy is the first game from the Wii to be completely decompiled.
  • This milestone paves the way for fan-made ports to modern gaming systems.
  • In fact, an unofficial PC version of Super Mario Galaxy is currently under development.

While several GameCube titles have been successfully decompiled previously, the same hadn’t happened for any Wii games—until now.

The group SMGCommunity has achieved a full decompilation of Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii, marking the first instance of a complete Wii game being reverse-engineered. This process is often necessary for unofficial ports to be created for PCs, smartphones, and other platforms.

Additionally, a developer collective known as Luma’s Workshop has introduced an unofficial PC port, named AstroCore. This project will reportedly be entirely created by human developers, implying minimal reliance on AI for coding tasks. While AI can assist in expediting the process, reliance on it can lead to problematic code quality if not managed well, often complicating future updates.

Though an Android version has not been confirmed, previous projects suggest that the community may develop one in the future. For example, shortly after Super Smash Bros Melee for GameCube was decompiled, an unofficial Android port became available.

Super Mario Galaxy is not the sole title being reversed; other significant Wii games, including Mario Strikers: Charged, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Rock Band 3, and Xenoblade Chronicles, are also undergoing this decompilation process.
