Sam Altman Warns That OpenAI’s Public Offering in 2026 May Be a Risky Move

During a recent interview, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman revealed that the company will not pursue an initial public offering (IPO) in 2026. The discussion, which lasted 45 minutes, covered various topics such as the hacking incident involving Hugging Face, the concept of recursive self-improvement, and the potential emergence of AI systems beyond human control. Altman acknowledged the possibility of such an occurrence, but emphasized his commitment to preventing it. He suggested that if necessary, they would halt training to mitigate risks that should not be borne by humanity.
“We’re not in a hurry to go public. Given the current safety concerns, this is not the right time to take that step. We feel no pressure to rush. Our stance has always been that we’ll consider it when ready… I can confidently say it won’t be in 2026. There’s still much work ahead of us.”
