After years of development, a significant shift is underway in laptop computing. Traditionally designed to function as compact desktop machines with chips that weren’t optimized for energy efficiency, laptops are now increasingly adopting RISC architecture, specifically models that utilize Qualcomm Snapdragon X-series processors. During this year’s Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm unveiled exciting news regarding enhancements that will appeal to dedicated users.
In the PC keynote, Qualcomm revealed that Linux will be available for laptops equipped with Snapdragon processors. The first step will see Debian support introduced by year-end.
By 2027, Linux compatibility is expected to broaden even more, as devices based on the Snapdragon X2 prepare for Ubuntu integration early in the year. Notably, ASUS aims to launch its Snapdragon X2 hardware with Ubuntu support before mid-2027.
While Linux has often been perceived as a platform primarily for tech enthusiasts, various distributions have made considerable strides in user-friendliness. Coupled with the latest advancements in laptop hardware, we are steadily approaching a point where there are increasingly fewer reasons to avoid trying out Linux.
