Summary

  • The MaliSX2 Vulkan driver is set to be integrated into the Dolphin and HakuX emulators.
  • MaliSX2, introduced in the ARMSX2 emulator, serves as an alternative graphics driver for devices not using Snapdragon chips.
  • Initial tests show no major performance improvements, but the project is still in its early stages.

Typically, Snapdragon processors are favored for running demanding emulators due to the availability of custom Turnip GPU drivers. These custom drivers enhance performance, improve compatibility, and resolve bugs compared to standard system drivers. While several attempts have been made to create similar GPU drivers for non-Snapdragon devices, the recent launch of MaliSX2 in the ARMSX2 emulator marked a significant advancement. Now, it has been revealed that this tool will also be featured in other emulators.

Last month, MaliSX2 was introduced as a Vulkan driver specifically for devices equipped with Arm Mali GPUs. Such devices include those powered by MediaTek, older Pixel models, select Samsung devices, current flagship Galaxy tablets, and various handheld consoles. When released, the ARMSX2 team reported that previously unplayable titles like Ace Combat 4 and 5 were now performing at full speed with the new driver. Many users have noted significant improvements after switching to it as well.

Interestingly, MaliSX2 is extending its use beyond just PS2 emulation. The project’s GitHub page indicates that the Vulkan driver will also be available for Dolphin and HakuX, which could lead to enhanced performance for GameCube, Wii, and original Xbox games.

On the downside, MaliSX2 support is currently limited to development versions of Dolphin (accessible through the settings menu). Meanwhile, this feature is not yet available in the official builds of HakuX. During a brief test of three games (Tony Hawk’s Underground, Wrestlemania XIX, Dave Mirra 2) on the ANBERNIC RG477V, I didn’t observe significant performance gains.

Nonetheless, it’s still quite early for the MaliSX2 functionality within Dolphin and HakuX, so encountering issues isn’t surprising. The driver option isn’t available in stable emulator releases yet. However, those using Mali-equipped smartphones, tablets, or handhelds should keep a lookout for this project. Significant improvements have already been noted in ARMSX2, suggesting that similar enhancements for Dolphin and HakuX might be on the horizon.
