Anthropic has launched a new iteration of Claude, tailored to address queries from both human users and sophisticated AI agents. The newly introduced Sonnet 5 model is engineered to execute agentic tasks, mirroring performance metrics of the latest Opus models, but comes at a reduced cost.
Effective from September 1, the pricing for Sonnet 5 will be set at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. In the meantime, the rates will be even lower prior to this date. For comparison, the existing Opus 4.8 model charges $4 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. These prices will apply within the Claude Code and the Claude Platform, and Sonnet 5 will be accessible across all subscription tiers, serving as the default model for both free and professional plans.
Agentic AI solutions often generate significantly higher query volumes than human users can, leading to considerable budget strains for enterprises that utilize these services. Though there are still options for casual users that are free, the new tokenizer of Sonnet 5 is expected to deliver enhanced efficiency, particularly for those who frequently rely on agentic functionalities. While this may not completely eliminate the risk of overspending, it aims to provide better cost management for heavy users.
