US Government Grants Anthropic Permission to Reintroduce Its Mythos and Fable AI Models
The Department of Commerce has removed export limitations.
The US government has rescinded its export restrictions on Anthropic’s Mythos 5 and Fable 5, enabling the firm to restore customer access to these AI models. Recently, the government required Anthropic to halt access for all foreign nationals, including those employed by the company within the US. Consequently, Anthropic blocked access to both models to comply with government regulations. Now, the company has confirmed via a social media post that access will be reinstated starting tomorrow, July 1, following approval from the Department of Commerce.

Recently, Anthropic gained approval to redeploy Mythos 5 to select US organizations engaged in critical infrastructure defense. This deployment provided about 100 organizations with access to the firm’s advanced cybersecurity capabilities as part of Project Glasswing. However, the status of Fable, created to make Mythos’ features more broadly accessible, remained uncertain.
As reported by a credible source, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick informed Anthropic through a letter that the restrictive measures on Fable were lifted after the company agreed to take proactive steps in identifying and mitigating security risks linked to the models. The restrictions had initially been imposed after concerns from Amazon and other entities that the models could be vulnerable to misuse. In response to the earlier restrictions, Anthropic had defended its AI models, emphasizing the safeguards implemented to prevent potential abuse.
