Reddit Joins the Trend with Its Own ‘For You’ Feed Feature

Reddit has introduced a new feature resembling the “For You” feed made popular by TikTok. Announced on Wednesday, users will now encounter two options upon logging in: “For You” and “Following.”

The “For You” feed presents a blend of posts from subscribed communities alongside personalized recommendations. This feature aims to help users discover new communities and discussions that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. In contrast, the “Following” feed is limited to posts from communities the user has opted to join.

According to Reddit, this update intends to enhance feelings of connection, participation, and belonging among users.

The platform hopes the revamped feed will encourage users to engage with content from communities beyond their current subscriptions. This move aligns Reddit with the broader social media trend of algorithmically curated feeds, which have become the norm in digital interactions.

With this initiative, Reddit joins a host of other well-known social media platforms, such as Instagram, X, Threads, and Facebook, that have integrated similar “For You” feeds.

However, not all users may embrace this alteration; some might prefer the previous focus on content strictly from their joined communities, rather than interspersing recommendations. Feedback from early testers of the new feature indicates a degree of dissatisfaction with the update.

Reddit assures users that they can easily toggle between feeds and will return to their last viewed option upon their next visit.

It’s important to note that while Reddit has historically featured suggestions from outside subscribed communities, this new design elevates those recommendations to their own dedicated section on the homepage.

In a recent blog post, the company stated, “This new feed experience serves as a foundational step towards facilitating discoveries that lead to novel and relevant content—be it an idea, connection, unique perspective, or a new hobby. A more engaging internet is one where users find value and actively contribute.”

The global rollout of this new feed experience is expected to take place over the coming weeks, according to the company.
