The “Father of the Internet” Bids Farewell to His Groundbreaking Journey

Vinton Cerf will retire from his role as Google’s chief internet evangelist next week, closing a significant chapter in technology history.

During his address at the Open Frontier conference organized by the Laude Institute, Cerf received recognition from Dave Patterson, a renowned professor at UC Berkeley known for his work on RISC processor architecture.

“Vint has spent over 20 years at Google, and he will be retiring one week from today. Let’s give him a round of applause for an impressive career,” Patterson stated, prompting applause from the audience.

At the time of publication, Google had not provided a comment.

Cerf, who is 83, alongside Robert Kahn, played a pivotal role in developing the networking protocols that form the backbone of the modern internet. Their work on TCP/IP, established in the 1970s, has earned them various accolades, including honorary degrees, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Turing Award.

Since 2005, Cerf has held the position of vice president and chief internet evangelist at Google. (It’s fair to say the internet is thoroughly evangelized now, for better or worse.)

During the panel, Cerf shared the stage with fellow computer scientists recognized for their contributions to sustainable open-source projects. This group included Patterson; François Chollet, creator of the Keras deep-learning framework; John Ousterhout, the Stanford scholar behind the Tcl programming language; and Matei Zaharia, co-founder and chief technologist of Databricks. They offered insights into developing long-lasting open-source systems, which is becoming more relevant as founders look to leverage open infrastructure for future AI applications.

Much of the conference revolved around the challenges posed by the centralization of advanced models in a few resource-rich labs, contrasting the decentralized nature of the open internet that facilitated the durability of Cerf’s protocols. Cerf anticipated that the emergence of AI agents—software with autonomous capabilities interacting with one another—would drive tech companies towards standardized protocols once more.

“The agentic model of AI, where various agents engage and collaborate, will necessitate composability and a need for interoperability and standardization,” Cerf explained.

If Cerf’s prediction holds true, companies that establish early interoperability standards may gain a significant edge in shaping how the agent-based economy functions, similar to the early conflicts over internet protocols.

While other panelists suggested that natural language might suffice for communication between LLM agents, Cerf stressed the need for formal standards.

“I don’t think English is the best medium—though it’s flexible, it harbors ambiguity. Precision is crucial for interactions between agents. They need to be clear about the agreements they reach,” Cerf cautioned.

“Consider the classic telephone game where whispers get distorted by the time they reach the tenth person. Imagine agents communicating in natural language; it could be quite alarming.”

In a lighter moment, Patterson reminisced about meeting Cerf, noted for his penchant for three-piece suits, during his graduate studies in the 1970s.

“He has always been the most stylish computer scientist I’ve known,” Patterson remarked. “I recall Vint showing up as a graduate student in a shirt and tie back in the ’70s.”

“That’s absolutely correct,” Cerf responded. “I even wore a vest. I sought to stand out, and instead of sporting long hair or piercings, I figured dressing uniquely was a good approach.”
