Unlocking the Power of Claude’s Voice Mode: A Comprehensive Guide

Anthropic’s chatbot has a robust voice feature for users who prefer speaking to typing.

Since 2025, Anthropic’s Claude has included a voice mode, enabling users to communicate with the chatbot vocally rather than through written prompts. In July, the feature received enhancements that broadened its usability. Initially, voice mode only supported the Haiku model, limiting its capabilities to reduce latency. Now, users can access Claude’s more advanced models, including Sonnet and Opus, which can also integrate information from connected applications.

If you’re interested in trying out this feature, here’s how to get started.

How to Use Claude’s Voice Feature

The voice feature is available on both mobile apps (for Android and iOS) and desktop, with the best performance reported on mobile devices.

To use voice mode on mobile:

  1. Launch the Claude app.
  2. Tap the black waveform icon located at the bottom right of the screen (not the microphone icon nearby).
  3. If prompted, allow the app to access your microphone.
  4. Speak your prompt; Claude will respond once you finish.
  5. Claude will stay in voice mode until you tap Stop.

Note that Claude’s voice mode employs a “turn-based” system, where the bot listens before replying. This differs from other systems that allow simultaneous speech processing.

Due to this turn-based structure, brief pauses might be mistaken for the end of your input. Therefore, it’s advisable to ask multipart questions sequentially rather than all at once.

Selecting Different Models

You can select the model Claude utilizes from the model picker at the bottom of the screen. The options are:

  • Haiku: Quickest for simple responses
  • Sonnet: Best for daily tasks
  • Opus: Ideal for complex inquiries (available with a subscription).

Utilizing Connected Apps

As with written chat, voice mode can access your linked applications like Gmail and Google Calendar. For example, you can tell Claude to summarize recent emails by specifying the app in your request. You will need to authorize access for third-party apps if you’re using them for the first time.

Adjusting Claude’s Voice and Language Settings

As of July 2026, Claude supports voice mode in 14 languages, with some languages offering additional dialects. Your language selection also influences available voice options. For example, English users can choose from five different voices, while Japanese users have two options. Below is the list of supported languages:

  • English
  • English (India)
  • English (United Kingdom)
  • Chinese (Simplified)
  • Cantonese
  • French
  • French (Canada)
  • German
  • German (Austria)
  • Hindi
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese
  • Portuguese (Brazil)
  • Portuguese (Portugal)
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Spanish (Latin America)
  • Turkish
  • Ukrainian

A limitation is that Claude cannot understand when you switch languages mid-sentence. If you plan to converse in another language, state your intent or change the language from the Settings menu beforehand.

Settings section and select Voice. Here, you can preview different voice options by swiping through a carousel display. The available voice types in English are:

  • Buttery
  • Airy
  • Mellow
  • Glassy
  • Rounded

You can also modify Claude’s speech speed with options for Slow, Normal, and Fast. Finally, there are two input methods: Hands-free for quiet settings, and Push to talk.

Is a Paid Account Necessary for Claude Voice?

A paid subscription is not required to use Claude Voice, though users with free accounts are restricted to the Haiku and Sonnet models. For most prompts, the Sonnet model should suffice. To access the more advanced Opus model, a paid subscription is needed. Keep in mind that voice interactions count towards your usage limits.

Free accounts can connect to only one device at a time, but they can use any of the supported languages.
