For users of Chrome, getting Netflix to stream in 4K has often been a frustrating endeavor. Even those subscribed to the Premium plan have found themselves switching to browsers like Microsoft Edge on Windows or Safari on Mac just to enjoy the best video quality. This inconvenience can quickly become irritating for those who primarily use Chrome for everything else.

So, when news broke that Netflix was finally going to enable 4K streaming on Chrome, my excitement was palpable. However, that enthusiasm was short-lived.

Streaming Netflix in 4K on Chrome involves more than simply clicking play. A few additional steps must be completed, but the effort is definitely worthwhile. Here’s what you need to do to start watching.

Streaming Netflix in 4K on Chrome requires several steps beyond just having the latest version of the browser. Here’s a concise guide:

  1. Launch Google Chrome on your Windows PC.
  2. Click on the three-dot menu located in the upper right corner.
  3. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  4. In the sidebar, click on About Chrome.
  5. Chrome will automatically search for updates.
  6. If prompted, click the Relaunch button to complete the update installation.
  7. After reopening Chrome, head to Netflix and start streaming a 4K available title.
  8. While the content is playing, press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + D to display Netflix’s playback statistics.
  9. Check the resolution indicated in the stats to verify streaming in 4K.

This way, you’ll be able to confirm the improved quality, especially noticeable on a large 4K display. But trust the playback stats more than a simple visual comparison, as they provide accurate confirmation.

If updating Chrome was the only requirement for 4K streaming, the task would be a breeze. However, before you can dive into Netflix and expect to see an upgrade right away, a few more prerequisites need to be ensured.

First, you’ll need the latest version of Chrome (117 or newer) on a current version of Windows 11. Additionally, ensure you have Netflix’s Premium subscription, as that’s the only tier that provides access to Ultra HD content. Once these baseline conditions are met, pay attention to the more specific requirements.

Your hardware must also meet certain specifications. For this, you need a graphics card like an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 or newer, AMD Radeon RX 400-series GPUs or more recent options, and compatible Intel or AMD processors. It’s possible you may also need to install Microsoft’s HEVC Video Extensions depending on your setup. Therefore, a decent Windows PC doesn’t automatically guarantee readiness.

Moreover, the display must support 4K resolution at 60Hz, and external monitors need to be compatible with HDCP 2.2 for copy protection purposes. After confirming these settings, you can open Netflix on Chrome and make sure your playback quality is set to either Auto or High. Lastly, ensure that the content you want to view is actually available in 4K Ultra HD.

There’s one significant point to note: this enhancement appears to be exclusive to Windows at present. Chrome remains limited to 1080p on Mac, directing macOS users to Safari for 4K streaming on suitable devices.

This limitation can be disappointing for those switching between Windows and Mac, although the upgrade is still a great improvement for Windows users who no longer need to rely on Edge solely for Netflix. Once the setup is correctly implemented, finally enjoying Netflix’s quality directly in Chrome makes the effort worthwhile.

Seeking Validating Proof of 4K Quality

As for my setup, I’m using a gaming PC with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 linked to a 4K monitor with a refresh rate of 165Hz. Essentially, I had all the necessary components for Netflix’s 4K streaming, and after frequently switching back to Edge for improved quality, I was eager to see if Chrome could finally deliver.

Of course, I wanted proof of the 4K experience, so I watched multiple popular series and films, checking playback stats along the way. Each time, the results confirmed I was getting the 4K quality I sought.

There are no words to express how satisfying this experience was.

The visuals were incredibly sharp on my 4K monitor. Once I validated the quality through playback stats, I could finally enjoy the content rather than obsess over the resolution.

Fortunately, my hardware was not the issue. My powerhouse PC, coupled with a capable 4K monitor and a Netflix Premium plan, made for an optimal viewing setup. Chrome was the lone obstacle preventing me from enjoying 4K streaming. With that challenge resolved, it’s gratifying to directly access Netflix in Chrome, which I predominantly use.

Since then, every Netflix session on my Windows PC occurs in Chrome. The relief of not switching browsers has been profound, making the effort to set everything up worth it.

So, I’m delighted with my streaming quality, and with the guidelines provided, you can enjoy the same enhanced experience. However, I do have a singular request for Netflix: please extend this 4K privilege to Chrome on Macs as well. My MacBook could use that upgrade.
