This $500 Android Phone Highlights Google’s Missteps with the Pixel 11 Camera

Google recently unveiled the Pixel 11 series, garnering a positive response for its advanced technology, impressive AI features, and strong camera functionality alongside a comprehensive software update program.

However, the standard Pixel 11 falls short in camera capabilities compared to the Pro versions. Additionally, a new $500 Android device from a competitor underscores the limitations of Google’s offerings.

After testing the new Redmi Note 17 Pro Max, it’s impressive with its 10,000mAh battery, promising up to three days of use. However, its camera system—50MP+8MP—feels average and would typically be expected on a lower-priced device.

In exploring the camera features, I noticed two functionalities that are absent from the $900 Pixel 11 models.

Firstly, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max allows for full-resolution 50MP shots. This option is not available on the Pixel 11 or its earlier base models, even though they possess superior hardware that should support such features.

Furthermore, a manual or pro mode is present on this $500 phone but lacking in the $900 Pixel 11. This mode lets users adjust settings like ISO, white balance, and shutter speed before taking a photo. Despite its budget constraints, the Redmi device allows for a fine-tuning experience, crucial for those on a limited budget wanting better photography options.

The standard Pixel 8, 9, 10, and 11 all miss out on this manual option, relegating it solely to the Pro editions. This decision appears to create a market incentive rather than being based on technological limitations.

It’s worth mentioning that the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max is not the first of its family to showcase these features; prior models like the Redmi Note 11 series also had high-resolution and manual functionalities.

In terms of camera performance, I’d still favor the Pixel 11 or even the Pixel 10a over Xiaomi’s recent offering. Google’s camera application is known for producing high-quality images, while the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max does not particularly stand out in image quality compared to mid-range competitors. The newly added features in the Pixel 11, like Camera Looks and Magic Capture, are also noteworthy.

Nevertheless, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max certainly underscores the point that Google is withholding these fundamental camera options from their standard flagship range, as these features are considered standard as of 2026.
