Summary:
- Some users of the new iPhone Duo are experiencing cracked inner displays, primarily near the hinge area.
- One individual claimed their screen broke after opening the device fewer than 20 times, and Apple provided an immediate replacement.
- The extent and cause of the issue remain uncertain, making it difficult to determine if this is a widespread design flaw.
As of October 23, the highly anticipated Apple iPhone Duo is beginning to land in the hands of customers. However, rather than a smooth launch, reports of troubling issues cast a shadow over the initial excitement.
Early adopters are encountering problems with the foldable device’s hinge, with several claiming that their inner screens developed cracks after minimal usage. This is concerning, especially considering the phone’s hefty price tag of $2,000.
The first reports of this problem emerged from users in China and Australia, regions that received the device ahead of others due to time zone differences.

A user on Reddit, known as Midnight_Slump, shared that their iPhone Duo broke after approximately six hours, with the screen cracking after being opened fewer than 20 times.
“Had my iPhone Duo for about six hours and had probably opened it fewer than 20 times. I was showing it to a friend, and as I opened it, I felt something around the internal hinge, underneath the screen. As I continued opening it, I heard an audible crack, and the screen broke right along the hinge.”
They visited an Apple Store and received a replacement immediately, but expressed frustration over this early malfunction. “Day zero, six hours of ownership, and already on my second phone,” they remarked.
Additional reports indicate that this issue may not be isolated. Another Reddit user, Bitter_Offer7123, shared images from Chinese forums showcasing similar damage occurring in nearly the same location along the iPhone Duo’s crease.
It is concerning that all reported damage appears to be concentrated in the same area. Multiple individual devices failing in an identical manner raises questions about a possible design defect, though it is worth noting that this does not seem to be a universal problem.
Pre-release reviews of the iPhone Duo have begun to emerge, and none mention similar concerns. In fact, certain tech reviewers, including YouTubers Tim Pan and Joanna Stern, subjected the device to rigorous folding tests and while signs of wear became visible after extensive use, no cracks were reported.
This raises the possibility that a limited number of faulty units may have been released or that user error could be contributing to the issue, rather than indicating a broader manufacturing problem. However, it remains too early for definitive conclusions. As more units reach consumers in the coming days, additional reports of similar problems are anticipated.
