The Pentagon Enlists Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey for Strategic Military Guidance

On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth introduced a new initiative aimed at exploring future warfare in light of rapid technological advancements, called Project Meridian.

The project will be co-led by prominent figures including Elon Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. They will collaborate with other experts in academia and policy under the leadership of Defense Department CTO Emil Michael. The team’s mission is to analyze future battlefields and the technologies that soldiers may deploy in those environments, according to Hegseth’s announcement.

The number of participants in the team is currently unknown, but they will have 120 days to deliver their findings and suggest practical solutions to begin the development, testing, and implementation of advanced technologies aimed at maintaining America’s military superiority, as stated by Hegseth.

Additionally, Hegseth unveiled an Autonomous Warfare Command to expedite the creation and deployment of unmanned systems and drones. Interestingly, the Pentagon noted that this study would be conducted through a partner organization, although it has not disclosed the name or leadership of this entity.

In response to inquiries from TechCrunch, the Defense Department directed attention to the press release, indicating there was no further information available beyond the Secretary’s remarks.

Musk’s and Luckey’s participation is not unexpected, especially as Musk has reportedly strengthened his ties with the current administration. He recently shared a lunch with the president and other AI leaders to discuss the trajectory of artificial intelligence. This project may signify Musk’s first formal engagement with government initiatives since departing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) last year.

Musk’s company SpaceX provides satellite services for the U.S. government and operates a satellite network that supports national defense operations. On the other hand, Luckey’s Anduril focuses on developing autonomous military systems and drones and has recently secured government contracts for a range of defense technologies, including long-range missiles and semi-autonomous aircraft.

The Trump administration has prioritized the development and procurement of advanced military technologies, seeking assistance from companies in Silicon Valley. Some critics argue that involving Musk and Luckey in Project Meridian aligns too closely with their corporate interests, as they may pursue solutions their businesses already offer.
