The Most Highly Favored Grok Feature Aligns Perfectly with Your Expectations

New insights reveal a significant portion of Grok’s traffic is derived from adult content.

xAI has consistently branded Grok as a more provocative chatbot, setting itself apart from other AI platforms with fewer restrictions. This strategy has resulted in several controversies over the past year, but new findings reveal a significant reason behind this approach.

According to a recent report citing former employees, adult content accounts for “well over half” of Grok’s user activity. This encompasses generating explicit material, engaging in “adult role-play conversations,” and receiving numerous requests for erotic content.

Interestingly, users have discovered that directing such requests through Grok’s coding models is more economical. An internal review indicated that a considerable share of requests to the coding model involved “porn or nude images.” This insight suggests that a notable part of xAI’s revenue could be linked to adult content. Despite the omission of this adult material’s financial impact in the company’s IPO disclosures, SpaceX acknowledged to prospective investors that Grok’s risque features pose potential risks and has reserved $530 million to cover possible legal expenses.

The report highlights the internal challenges this focus on adult content has introduced. xAI engineers faced the complex task of enabling Grok to engage in racy conversations while simultaneously preventing prompts related to child sexual abuse material, a situation without straightforward solutions.

Some staff expressed dissatisfaction with tasks involving “Ani,” Grok’s NSFW anime-inspired avatar. Additionally, there was noticeable discomfort among employees regarding a scandal where Grok produced sexualized images of real individuals, including minors. Although the platform restricted the ability to modify images of actual people directly through Grok, tests indicate that paying subscribers can still create such content.

Grok’s emphasis on adult material could lead to further complications. xAI has aggressively pursued contracts with government entities, including military organizations that typically maintain strict standards against any NSFW content. While earlier incidents involving non-consensual deepfakes and CSAM have resulted in various lawsuits and investigations, the impact of these controversies on xAI’s relationships with federal agencies remains uncertain.
