SpaceX Aims to Transform into a Key Mobile Network Provider Through Low-Band Spectrum Acquisition

This will enable Starlink’s signal to effectively penetrate walls, reaching users within buildings.

SpaceX is set on transforming itself into a significant mobile carrier, extending beyond its role as a satellite internet provider with Starlink. To accomplish this ambition, the company has reached an agreement to acquire the entire 800 MHz spectrum portfolio from Grain Management. This acquisition involves a low-band spectrum license portfolio, offering up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band, which is awaiting approval from the FCC. Securing this low-band spectrum is crucial for addressing a key technical hurdle that SpaceX faces in its effort to position Starlink as a leading mobile service provider in the United States.

Previously, SpaceX secured spectrum licenses from EchoStar, which included frequencies utilized in the U.S. for both mobile and satellite communications services. However, this new low-band spectrum will significantly enhance the ability of Starlink Mobile’s signal to traverse walls and other barriers. While established carriers operate on a broader range of frequencies, this move will enable SpaceX to present a strong alternative to their services. As most mobile devices are compatible with this band, SpaceX can potentially offer services to millions of users, regardless of their smartphone model.

According to SpaceX, “With this new low-band spectrum and our Gen2 constellation, Starlink Mobile can now become the first network operator to deploy both satellite and terrestrial spectrum.” This addition will ensure that SpaceX can provide dependable indoor service, while Starlink’s broadband internet will continue to deliver connectivity even in remote locations.

Recently, the FCC has granted SpaceX permission to launch 15,000 Starlink Mobile Gen2 satellites, which are designed to work effectively within the 2 GHz spectrum. These satellites are expected to provide over 100 times the bandwidth compared to the existing satellite generation, greatly expanding SpaceX’s ability to offer high-speed internet across various locations worldwide.
