Snapchat Withdraws Incentives for Completely AI-Created Spotlight Material

Snapchat has taken a decisive step against AI-generated content by announcing that it will no longer highlight fully AI-created videos. The platform aims to elevate content crafted by real individuals.

In a recent update, Snapchat disclosed that it will modify its recommendation algorithms to ensure that only videos produced by actual users qualify for Spotlight features.

In its official blog, Snapchat emphasized its desire for Spotlight to be a hub for genuine creativity, showcasing the unique perspectives, personal stories, and individual moments that users choose to create and share.

While Snapchat is moving away from fully AI-generated content, it clarified that creators are still encouraged to leverage its AI tools for enhancing or editing their videos.

This initiative is part of Snapchat’s broader commitment to refining Spotlight and returning its focus to original, human-generated content. Earlier this year, the company indicated plans to minimize the visibility of AI-produced videos.

As public dissatisfaction with low-quality AI content continues to grow, numerous companies are revisiting their policies to deprioritize such entries in their algorithms, introduce reporting options, or even remove specific AI functionalities.

For example, LinkedIn recently debuted a feature that allows users to flag posts they believe appear to be AI-generated, labeled “seems like AI slop”. Similarly, Substack has rolled out a tool designed to help users detect AI-generated newsletters.

In another recent incident, Meta encountered notable backlash over a feature on Instagram that allowed users to alter public account photos using AI, prompting the company to eliminate the feature altogether.

YouTube has also stepped up its measures against subpar AI content by establishing clearer monetization guidelines, which prohibit the monetization of “inauthentic” material, covering anything from generic and repetitive content to videos featuring AI personas discussing sensitive subjects like health and finance.

In related news, Snapchat introduced new content controls last month aimed at safeguarding underage users, mandating that those aged 13 to 15 share Spotlight posts only with individuals they follow, helping to mitigate risks like doxxing.
