Sennheiser Momentum 5 Review: Exceptional Audio, Impressive Longevity, and Minimal Trade-offs
With many headphones priced between $300 and $400 available today, it can be challenging to find those that truly stand apart. Over the past few weeks, I analyzed the Sennheiser Momentum 5 to see if they offer unique qualities, evaluating aspects like sound reproduction, noise cancellation, comfort, and battery performance.
Priced at $399.99, the Momentum 5 is positioned within the high-end headphone segment. This pricing puts them in direct competition with more expensive models like the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Apple AirPods Max 2, while still catering to consumers in search of premium options at a more reasonable cost.
In terms of audio quality, the Momentum 5 excels. Vocals come through clearly, and the bass is powerful yet well-balanced, allowing for subtle musical elements, such as background harmonies or distant instrumentals, to emerge, which many lower-priced headphones often overlook. If I had to summarize their sound in a single word, it would be “balanced.”
The headphones also feature Dolby Atmos technology, creating an immersive sound experience where audio feels as if it’s enveloping you from all directions rather than just from the sides.
This iteration has seen an upgrade in the number of microphones to eight, enhancing its active noise cancellation (ANC) capabilities. Common intrusive sounds, like conversations and background chatter, are significantly diminished. According to Sennheiser, these headphones are now up to three times more effective in blocking such disturbances compared to their predecessor.
While they may not completely mute all sounds, like an airplane engine, the ANC functionality is efficient and doesn’t create the uncomfortable pressure that some ANC models can induce.
In terms of wearability, while these headphones may not have the luxurious feel of competing brands like Apple or Sony, the price difference makes this a forgivable compromise.
One standout feature is the impressive battery life, rated for 57 hours of use, a figure that held true during my testing. For reference, this nearly doubles the battery life of the Sony WH-1000XM6 and comes close to tripling that of the AirPods Max 2.
When the battery does need charging, a quick 10-minute top-up provides up to seven hours of listening time, while a complete recharge takes around two hours.
A key advantage of the Momentum 5 compared to others is the replaceable battery feature, allowing users to swap out the battery when its lifespan expires instead of purchasing an entirely new set of headphones.
Another surprising benefit was the slim carrying case included. I typically struggle to fit headphones into medium-sized bags, but the Momentum 5 fits nicely, making it ideal for travel without occupying too much space.
The accompanying Smart Control Plus app allows users to customize various settings. It includes an eight-band equalizer for personal sound adjustments or access to Sennheiser’s presets. The app also offers ANC level adjustments, as well as a wind noise reduction mode. Additionally, the “Sound Personalization” feature guides users through a test to establish a sound profile tailored to their hearing needs.
Overall, the Sennheiser Momentum 5 proves to be a strong contender in its price range. They deliver excellent audio quality and impressive battery life, with only minor drawbacks. They are slightly heavier than the Sony WH-1000XM6 and may not provide the same level of comfort as some other high-end models, but at $399.99, they offer great value with solid performance where it really counts.
