Paramount and Warner Bros. Joining Forces: Welcome to the New Era of Skydance

David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance, made the announcement on social media.

The anticipated $110 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. will officially take on the name Skydance, as announced by CEO David Ellison in a social media message.

Expected to finalize this month after clearing its last major regulatory challenge in September, this merger will combine the two iconic film studios and bring their streaming services, HBO Max and Paramount+, together. The newly formed Skydance will manage popular franchises including Harry Potter, DC properties, and Game of Thrones. The name Skydance harkens back to the company Ellison established in 2006.

In his inaugural post from a new social media account, Ellison expressed that Skydance’s goal is to merge Warner Bros. and Paramount while honoring each studio’s unique qualities. He emphasized that both studios have rich legacies and identities that have captivated audiences for decades. Ellison noted they sought a corporate identity that would not overshadow the uniqueness of Paramount and Warner Bros., but rather create a distinct identity for the combined entity while ensuring both studios maintain their prominence.

Even after resolving an antitrust lawsuit last month, which facilitated the upcoming acquisition of Warner Bros., concerns remain regarding the editorial independence of CNN and CBS News, now part of Skydance. Reports indicate that Paramount has agreed to establish a news editorial independence board to oversee the functioning of both networks and has committed to releasing 30 theatrical films annually.
