No Other Video Game Budgets Compare to the Extravagance of GTA 6

The staggering budget for a video game can be astonishing at first, but it becomes more understandable when you think about the complexity involved in creating a contemporary game, which often resembles a major film production. Crafting a vast open-world game requires a diverse team including actors, writers, programmers, animators, designers, and composers. While films usually spend a couple of years in production—aside from a few exceptional cases like the Avatar franchise—GTA VI has been under development for nearly a decade. As the project nears its finish, it faces an extensive testing phase involving yet another dedicated team.

Except for a few indie successes, many video games today see their budgets escalating into the multi-million dollar range swiftly. The process of game development often spans several years, engaging hundreds of team members on a singular project.

In recent years, both the costs and the timelines associated with game development have risen significantly. In legal documents from 2023, it was disclosed that Sony Interactive Entertainment invested $212 million in Horizon Forbidden West and $220 million in The Last of Us: Part II.

Additionally, court filings indicated that Activision’s spending on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War exceeded $700 million throughout the game’s lifecycle. Today’s live service games demand ongoing resources for updates, new maps, game modes, and additional content. The initial budget for the game was likely much lower than that total figure.

Based on conservative estimates, GTA VI is expected to cross this financial boundary. This is even before taking into account its online mode, which will likely not launch alongside the single-player game in November 2026.

Will this investment pay off? Despite the fact that it has been over ten years since GTA V launched its Online mode, leaked financial data indicates that Rockstar continues to receive millions weekly from microtransactions and various memberships.

With such significant revenue potential, it isn’t surprising that Rockstar and its publisher Take-Two Interactive are prepared to allocate hundreds of millions, if not billions, toward GTA VI. The single-player mode is projected to sell hundreds of millions of units, while the online portion could cultivate a devoted player base for many years ahead. In 2013, GTA V achieved sales of $800 million within just one day after its release, and its total earnings now hover around the $10 billion milestone.
