Instagram is simplifying the Reel creation process with a new feature called “First Draft.” Announced this Tuesday via a post on Threads, this editing tool automatically trims selected video clips and eliminates pauses, creating a cohesive initial cut from the most engaging moments.
The platform states that this feature can generate a first draft in under 10 seconds, which could significantly reduce the editing time for creators and make video production more accessible for those lacking extensive editing experience. Rather than spending time meticulously editing each clip, users can begin with an automatically compiled draft and then enhance it as needed.
Currently, First Draft is being launched for iPhone users. It can be accessed directly from Instagram’s camera while shooting or from the Reels gallery after multiple clips are selected.
While this feature is not groundbreaking, as similar auto-editing tools exist in applications like Adobe Firefly’s Quick Cuts and CapCut’s Auto Cut, Instagram’s integration of this function within its app reduces the need for creators to transfer their clips to a different editing platform.
This year, Instagram has unveiled several tools for content creators, including a “Replace Audio” function that allows users to change music on existing posts without needing to delete and re-upload. Additionally, the company is developing a new AI assistant for its video-editing application, Edits.
Further, Instagram is testing a “Series” feature designed to let creators bundle related Reels together, enabling viewers to watch them in a specific sequence for a more organized content experience.
Interestingly, the announcement of First Draft coincides with Instagram head Adam Mosseri’s expected testimony in Meta’s high-profile trial concerning social media addiction. The lawsuit claims that Meta has created Instagram and Facebook in ways that promote excessive use among children, alleging that the company has not adequately addressed associated risks. Meta has denied these claims.
