I Chose the Dullest Color for My Pixel 11 Pro, and I’m Totally Obsessed!

The Shift to Matte: A New Era in Smartphone Aesthetics

When it comes to smartphones, personal preference often leans towards vibrant and eye-catching designs. Past favorites like the red Nexus 5 and the Prism Green Galaxy S10 Plus demonstrate this trend well. However, a switch to a more understated design like a black phone can feel somewhat mundane. This year, despite previously loving the Jade Pixel 10 Pro, I opted for a sleek black phone to escape the glossy and slippery finish that came with my previous device.

Matte: The Superior Choice

The Obsidian Pixel 11 Pro, while initially a plain choice, has proven to be a delight to use. In the two weeks of ownership, I’ve never felt the need to wipe down the sides to remove smudges, a frequent necessity with the Pixel 10 Pro. The difference is stark; the glossy finish of its predecessor attracted fingerprints almost immediately, while the matte surface of the 11 Pro remains pristine.

Beyond just appearance, the matte finish enhances the feel of the phone, making it easier to grip. Unlike the slippery surface of my previous device, which often slipped from my hands, the Pixel 11 Pro offers a secure hold that feels comfortable during use.

While many smartphone users rely on cases for added protection, I believe a device should be designed to feel good in the hand without needing extra accessories. In casual scenarios, I typically forgo a case, but the Pixel 10 Pro’s slick exterior compelled me to change this habit. The Pixel 11 Pro has allowed me to return to my preference for a case-free experience, and it stands out as my favorite from the Pixel lineup since the Pixel 4.

Seeking Variety in Color

Functionality often takes precedence over aesthetics when choosing a phone, which is why I opted for the Obsidian Pixel 11 Pro over more colorful options like Olive, Fog, or Canyon. It’s disappointing, however, that only the black model was available in a matte finish. Colorful alternatives in glossy finishes often compromise on comfort and durability, which ultimately leads to a decline in their overall appeal.

Looking forward, I hope future iterations will expand the range of finishes and colors available. From firsthand accounts, many are excited about the matte finish seen on the Pixel 11 Pro, yet it seems a missed opportunity that it’s not available for all color options. I remain hopeful for the Pixel 12 series to showcase a lineup that includes more vibrant, matte finishes across all models. Optimistically, I envision the next generation to be colorful, affordable, and equipped with exceptional performance across the board.

In the meantime, to blend both functionality and aesthetics, I’ve decided to enhance my Pixel 11 Pro with a colorful skin to satisfy my design cravings.
