I’ve been feeling uninspired with streaming services lately. I ended my Netflix subscription last year due to ongoing dissatisfaction. However, finding a worthwhile alternative has proven difficult, especially given the limited options available.
After trying various platforms, I couldn’t find one that truly captivated me or offered good value for my money. Surprisingly, I ended up being drawn to Apple TV, which I had not anticipated.
If given the choice, would you subscribe to Apple TV or Netflix?

Apple TV was my last streaming option

For years, I was a dedicated Netflix user, enjoying its vast array of movies and shows. In contrast, Apple TV seemed limited in content. Despite hearing about popular shows like Ted Lasso and Severance, they weren’t enough to justify the subscription fee.
When comparing local streaming options in 2023, I discovered that Apple TV (previously Apple TV+) offered the highest subscription rates among default plans.
Apple TV’s cost versus its limited selection kept me from trying the service for years.
As I don’t own any Apple devices, I miss out on benefits like a complimentary three-month subscription when purchasing new products. The option for Family Sharing isn’t available either, since it requires an Apple device to set up.
Given its limited library, steep pricing, and the lack of perks, I had no compelling reasons to subscribe. Alternatives like Prime Video, Disney+, and a local service named Showmax seemed more appealing. My only interaction with Apple TV was a brief free trial to explore Foundation. Although I enjoyed the series, the content didn’t warrant a subscription.

Although Netflix still leads the streaming arena, users feel it has entered a decline, marked by price hikes and stricter password-sharing policies. Many were disappointed by the cancellation of beloved shows as the platform focused on reducing costs, leading to a growing collection of lower-quality content.
I had maintained my Netflix subscription, always finding something new to watch. But after numerous cancellations and slow pacing of shows, I finally decided to stop my subscription entirely. The platform no longer offered content that excited me, and the way new seasons were staggered felt more like a marketing tactic than genuine viewer engagement.
The streaming ecosystem is shifting due to rising costs, stricter policies, and prioritization of certain shows.
During this time, I found myself watching more TV. My evenings of gaming were less possible due to chronic pain, so I sought out series to watch after work. I tried Prime Video, the most affordable service I could find. While it had great shows, my enjoyment often felt limited, with only a lingering interest in discovering endings.
What I truly desired were rich, high-quality shows with deep storytelling. This kind of content has always felt synonymous with HBO, but unfortunately, the local provider stopped supplying it. Meanwhile, Disney Plus increased its pricing, making it one of the more expensive options available to me. This shift led me to seriously think about Apple TV as my new go-to streaming platform.
Discovering satisfaction with a streaming service again

My desire for powerful sci-fi narratives and the expanding collection of Apple TV’s offerings drove me to finally commit to the service. At its current rate of R124.99 (approximately $7.70) monthly, it no longer seemed exorbitant compared to Netflix’s R179 (around $11) standard plan or Disney Plus’s R179 ($11).
Options like Paramount Plus, Peacock, BritBox, and HBO Max aren’t accessible at my location. While I can find some content from these services on others through licensing, HBO’s offerings are completely unavailable. My principal choices became Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus, Apple TV, and a local platform named DStv Stream.
Apple TV emerged as the best choice due to its assortment of acclaimed sci-fi series, countering my previous stream fatigue. Even though it’s pricier than Prime Video, it’s not so much that I feel obligated to binge-watch every day. After a month of subscribing, it feels more like a satisfactory investment than a burden, and I have plenty of content to explore.
While Apple TV has its share of disappointments, there are many worthy shows that make it worthwhile.
Apple TV does have some misses; for example, I was eager to see Invasion but found it unsatisfactory. However, I didn’t feel my time was wasted, which has been the case with other platforms lately. Its user interface and recommendations could use some improvements, but the overall experience feels more under-optimized than completely lacking.

The standout feature of Apple TV is its exceptional content. Series like Silo, Foundation, and Murderbot have captivated me. I even found myself enjoying the quirky horror series Widow’s Bay. My watchlist is now filled with a variety of engaging shows, from historical dramas to nerdy comedies. For the first time in a while, I feel genuinely happy with my choice to subscribe.
Because I delayed my subscription, I have plenty to watch now. If you recently joined the platform, you might find less new content to explore. In regions with more streaming options, Apple TV might not seem as appealing.
However, if you appreciate high-quality sci-fi programming, I wholeheartedly recommend Apple TV. The value improves further if you can utilize Family Sharing or are considering an Apple One bundle.
