Huawei has introduced its latest trifold smartphone, the Mate XT 2, in China, showcasing features that suggest it was developed with a nod to Samsung’s innovations. The device employs an inward-folding design similar to that of the Galaxy Z TriFold, and it marks the debut of a privacy-enhancing display, akin to the one Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S26 Ultra this year.
The original Mate XT debuted in China in late 2024, followed by a wider international release. It utilized a unique accordion-style folding mechanism, eliminating the necessity for an additional cover screen. However, this design left sections of the sensitive folding display exposed. Subsequent models maintained this design, but the XT 2 takes cues from Samsung’s trifold approach, folding both sides of its 10.2-inch flexible display inward to better protect it.
One notable feature is the inclusion of a privacy OLED display, reminiscent of the technology found on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. When activated, this feature allows the screen to emit light at narrower angles, making it appear almost black from side views, while still being easily readable from the front. This privacy enhancement is an optional addition that requires the purchase of 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, along with an additional cost of ¥1,000 (approximately $150).
In addition to its unique display, the XT 2 is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro chipset and boasts improved water resistance rated at IP59, alongside a triple rear camera system. It launched today in China with a starting price of ¥19,999 ($3,000), but details regarding its global availability remain unclear. Meanwhile, Samsung’s own Galaxy Z TriFold was quickly discontinued after its last year’s launch, although there are indications that the company is developing a successor.
