How DoorDash’s Ground-Based Approach Laid the Foundation for Its Drone Strategy

DoorDash is taking strides toward establishing a drone delivery service by first addressing the logistical elements on the ground.

The company showcased its new six-propeller drone during its annual Dash Forward 2026 event on Wednesday, revealing that the focus on ground operations preceded the aircraft’s development.

Before launching the drone, DoorDash concentrated on building the necessary infrastructure, such as loading systems, the transfer process from restaurant kitchens, and packaging requirements.

DoorDash Labs, the research and development team responsible for the autonomous sidewalk delivery robot called Dot, also created the aerial service known as DoorDash Air. This team has developed the Autonomous Delivery Platform (ADP) software designed to coordinate delivery challenges involving human couriers, sidewalk bots, and now drones.

The ADP software employs intelligent routing that considers factors like weather conditions, flight distance, and ground traffic to determine the feasibility of air delivery for specific orders.

This comprehensive systems approach for DoorDash Air capitalizes on the company’s existing strengths. While not primarily a hardware company, DoorDash benefits from 13 years of collected user data, including insights from over 500,000 restaurants in its delivery marketplace.

The entirety of the DoorDash Air system has been designed based on historical ordering data, taking into account the average weight of orders and their typical delivery distances.

“We didn’t start with a drone and ask what would fit,” stated Harrison Shih, the head of DoorDash Air. “We started with actual consumer orders and the operations of local businesses, then built everything around those fundamentals.”

In July, DoorDash announced plans to initiate its drone delivery service following the acquisition of a Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, allowing it to operate commercial drone deliveries legally across the United States.

The newly introduced drone features six slowly spinning propellers situated on the ends of its arms and includes a winch to pick up, transport, and deliver packages.

DoorDash intends to launch its initial pilot deliveries in Northern California in collaboration with partners such as Chipotle, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and Momo N Curry.
