Google Cloud Accelerates AI Initiatives with Strategic Partnership with Accenture

Google Cloud is collaborating with Accenture to establish a specialized unit aimed at deploying engineers within businesses to facilitate the effective adoption of Google’s AI solutions.

This new initiative, named Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group, marks Google’s latest venture into the realm of “forward-deployed engineers” (FDEs). Other contenders in the AI sector, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Amazon, have recently introduced their own business divisions, betting that the implementation of AI technologies could evolve into a trillion-dollar industry.

Such investments are becoming essential for AI companies and large tech firms. These hyperscalers are investing vast sums—totaling hundreds of billions annually—into GPUs, data centers, and infrastructure, although the revenue from AI remains only a small portion of this expenditure.

During the second quarter, Google Cloud reported earnings of $24.8 billion, a significant part of which resulted from enterprise AI efforts. Yet, the scale of investment needed to sustain this growth is considerable. Alphabet, Google Cloud’s parent organization, is said to have accumulated around $811 billion in purchase commitments and contractual obligations by the end of June.

The expected return on investment is not yet materializing as anticipated by organizations and their investors, placing pressure on AI companies to stimulate demand for their products. However, enterprises are finding it challenging to achieve a tangible return on their AI expenditures.

It is commonly perceived that businesses lack the necessary expertise to effectively integrate AI technologies into their operations, which can not only reduce costs but potentially enhance profitability over time. This is where FDEs play a critical role, offering the ideal mix of business insight and AI skills to drive meaningful change.

As part of its collaboration with Accenture, Google plans to train up to 1,000 of the consultancy’s FDEs to assist enterprises in creating tailored AI applications on the Gemini Enterprise platform.

Recent data indicates that Google commands about 6% of enterprise AI spending in the U.S., whereas competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI account for 43.5% and 39.7%, respectively. This partnership with Accenture is a strategic move in Google’s ongoing efforts to expand its FDE model amid rising competition.

Earlier this year, Google Cloud announced a $750 million initiative to develop a partner ecosystem, positioning its FDEs within various consulting firms such as Capgemini, Cognizant, and Deloitte. Additionally, a multi-year collaboration with CVC Capital Partners aims to deploy FDEs directly into the firm’s portfolio companies.

Google isn’t the only tech giant facing challenges from newer enterprises. Companies focused on providing engineers to create tailored AI solutions — such as Ode alongside Anthropic or OpenAI’s Deployment Co. — pose significant competition to traditional consulting firms like Accenture. For Accenture, this collaboration with Google enhances its portfolio of FDE programs introduced this year, which also include partnerships with Microsoft, ServiceNow, and SAP.
