Foldable Phones Face Call Issues Due to Android Auto Glitch

Gemini appears to be the culprit.

Users of foldable smartphones have been experiencing difficulties when attempting to make outgoing calls through Android Auto. Various discussions on Reddit and forums for Google and Motorola reveal that several foldable devices lose calling functionality when closed. This issue seems to be linked to the introduction of Gemini software.

When users try to place calls with their devices closed, they encounter a notification prompting them to “flip open to continue.” Interestingly, incoming calls function normally. Many users note that the problems began after they started using the Gemini app.

While the precise cause of this issue is still under investigation, both Google and Motorola have acknowledged it and are gathering information from affected users in various forums.

Which devices are impacted?

Most reports indicate that the Motorola Razr Ultra models (specifically the 60 and 70) running Android 16 are primarily affected. One report also mentioned similar issues with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7, which only began after using Gemini. Android 16, rolled out in June 2025, included features such as live notification updates and enhanced security measures.

In a Reddit discussion from a few months ago, one user switched back from Gemini to Google Assistant, resolving their issue with outgoing calls while keeping the device closed. However, Google recently discontinued Google Assistant on various devices, including smartphones, which complicates matters.

Are there any solutions?

No official solutions have been released by Google or Motorola to date. While users have shared various attempts to resolve the issue, the only workaround appears to be to make calls only when the device is open.

The rising prominence of Gemini across Google’s platforms signifies a larger initiative to integrate AI technology into daily use. Although many accept the prevalence of AI, others remain cautious, particularly given the current instability that can lead to such glitches. Some users prefer reverting to non-AI applications or choosing alternatives that allow for manual control over AI features.
