Elon Musk Announces X Will Notify Users via DM for Posts Featured with Community Notes

The platform aims to enhance the visibility of user-generated corrections.

X plans to enhance its Community Notes feature by notifying users directly through messages whenever they engage with a post that has received a correction. Although Elon Musk did not provide a specific launch date for this update, it is expected to raise awareness about posts that may contain misleading information.

At present, users who like, share, or comment on a post with a Community Note are informed via notifications on the app or website. These notifications are sent after a note is deemed useful and has been visible for at least 24 hours. Additionally, the original poster is notified if their post receives a Community Note after it has been active for six hours. Given that users might overlook app notifications, Musk’s proposed change could help ensure corrections are more noticeable.

We will be releasing a new feature that sends you a message if a post you interacted with is corrected

The Community Notes initiative was introduced by X as a primary strategy to combat misinformation in 2022, two years post its initial unveiling as Birdwatch. These crowd-sourced corrections aim to alleviate Musk’s concerns regarding potential overreach or censorship on the platform, although doubts remain about their effectiveness in curbing misinformation’s spread. A study published in May 2026 analyzed over 237,000 instances of posts and their re-shares and concluded that while Community Notes can significantly reduce the dissemination of false posts once they are annotated, they often come too late to address posts in their most viral phase.

Despite varying effectiveness, the Community Notes concept is gaining traction across other platforms. In 2025, Meta shifted its approach to moderation, discontinuing its US fact-checking system in favor of community notes across its applications. X has also adapted its correction sourcing by allowing contributors to request AI-generated notes for posts instead of manually crafting them.
