Dyson’s CameraJet: The $500 Toothbrush That Analyzes Your Smile with 3-in-1 Functionality

Dyson has unveiled the CameraJet, a toothbrush equipped with a “100k pixel macro lens camera” positioned just beneath the brush head. While this translates to 0.1 megapixels, which may seem minor, it is boosted by an advanced computing system. This system operates with 16 million lines of code and utilizes a machine learning model trained on 470,000 dental images during its development stage.

This significant computational capability allows the CameraJet to discern the spaces between your teeth. As you brush, when a gap is detected, the device releases a targeted jet of fluid in a conical shape, which aids in flossing alongside brushing. To ensure that liquid doesn’t accumulate in your mouth as you move the brush, these jets release small amounts of mouth rinse. The water tank embedded in the brush neck holds just 12.5ml (0.42 fluid ounces), roughly equivalent to two and a half teaspoons.

Dyson claims that the CameraJet’s “Gap Optical Targeting” system processes “28 live images per second to identify and aim at gaps between teeth in real-time,” delivering a jet to the identified gap within 100 milliseconds of detection.

Beyond just directing water, the integrated camera allows users to observe their mouth—especially the areas in the back of their teeth—using the MyDyson app. This feature is active during real-time viewing or auto-jetting sessions, and Dyson assures users that no images are stored on the device or online. The app also provides brushing tips, guidance, and personalized feedback, highlighting strengths and areas needing improvement, while allowing users to customize their brushing intensity and jetting options.

In addition to the camera capabilities, Dyson has incorporated an “anti-gravity tank” that utilizes a diaphragm pump and pressure chamber, adapting to various angles during use to deliver fluid precisely regardless of how you hold the toothbrush—even if it’s upside down.

Dyson emphasizes the unique shape of its water stream. Unlike traditional water flossers with narrow jets, Dyson’s fluid dynamicists have spent years refining the fluid jet profile to enhance plaque removal effectiveness. Notably, the company partnered with the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Dentistry for five years to create a “proxy plaque,” aiding in their engineering efforts.

The culmination of these innovations is a cone-shaped fluid spray that Dyson claims provides broader coverage for plaque removal while maintaining lower pressure to be gentler on gums and enamel.

In terms of fluid options for the tank, users can fill it with a clear, SLS-free mouth rinse to prevent foaming. Dyson is also introducing a non-foaming toothpaste and a low-foaming mouth rinse, ensuring the camera can function without obstruction from foam.
