In a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, the cast humorously tackled the ominous warnings being issued by the AI industry. Jane Wickline delivered a comedic portrayal of Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic.
Michael Che, the host of Weekend Update, initiated the segment, displaying a hint of hesitation in pronouncing Amodei’s last name. He noted that the CEO had awkwardly navigated a press tour where he seemed to concur with a former staff member’s alarming assertion that artificial intelligence could pose a threat to humanity.
Wickline’s interpretation of Amodei featured a striking wig, as she answered questions in a faltering manner, occasionally slipping into Gollum-esque dialogues with a darker persona. At one moment, she admitted, “AI is the devil and I its maker.”
In her portrayal, Wickline-as-Amodei confidently stated that executives in the AI sector “all share the same sentiment: We do not endorse our current activities.”
“AI isn’t a weapon; it’s a tool: A tool for creating weapons,” she emphasized. “And I encourage you to pressure me to halt.”
Regarding the optimistic predictions associated with the technology, like the potential to cure cancer, the fictional Amodei replied, “Let’s just say that in ten years, there’s about a 10% chance that cancer won’t be an issue for anyone.”
