Clicks Technology, a budding startup, is set to introduce its version of the BlackBerry smartphone. Today, they shared a new video showcasing what consumers can expect.
The device, named the Clicks Communicator, was unveiled at January’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. It targets individuals who predominantly use their phones for work-related activities such as texting and emailing. The device aims particularly at those who yearn for the tactile experience of a physical keyboard, often seen as advantageous for these functions.
With a price tag of $499, the Communicator resembles a contemporary iteration of the classic BlackBerry. It features a display for reading and sending messages accompanied by a touch-sensitive keyboard beneath.
However, the phone doesn’t merely replicate the BlackBerry; it introduces novel functionalities. One notable feature is the innovative “Signal Light,” which provides a customizable button on the side that lights up in various colors and patterns to signify incoming messages from specific contacts, groups, or applications.
The device also includes replaceable back covers, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a physical SIM card slot alongside an eSIM, expandable microSD storage of up to 2TB, and a tactile switch for toggling airplane mode.
The Clicks Communicator may attract an increasing number of users seeking to step back from contemporary smartphones filled with distracting social apps and games. The company has collaborated with Niagara Launcher to enable access to the necessary Android applications. With the Signal Light, users can safely disregard their phones unless a crucial notification appears.
In the recent video, Clicks Technology presents its pre-production hardware and software, giving a glimpse of what’s anticipated when the device starts shipping later this year.
During CES, TechCrunch had the opportunity to test a prototype of the Communicator, which matched the anticipated size and heft of the final product set for release. The prototype felt comfortably balanced and easy to grip, with keys providing a satisfying click reminiscent of traditional BlackBerry devices. Adjustments were planned to enhance performance for enthusiastic typists.
