ChatGPT Unveils Virtual Fitting Room for Fashion and Accessories

Summary

  • ChatGPT now enables users to virtually try on garments by utilizing a selfie or full-body image, thanks to its updated ChatGPT Images 2.5 feature.
  • Users can upload links to clothing items or photos of outfits, asking ChatGPT to find similar pieces, which can also be tried on virtually.
  • OpenAI is introducing new options for saving favorite items and creating folders for organized product storage, alongside the ability to reuse or delete reference photos for future try-ons.

Last year, ChatGPT introduced basic shopping functionalities, even though its suggestions have sometimes been unreliable, leading to instances of fake merchants. OpenAI is pressing forward, enhancing ChatGPT’s shopping features with a focus on virtual clothing trials, which align with practices seen in Google Shopping.

The updated tool allows users to see how clothes would fit their body type by attempting virtual fittings. This launch comes shortly after OpenAI shifted its focus away from the Instant Checkout feature.

Users can save their preferred products to a Favorites list or a designated folder for easy access. These updates were available in Canada and are likely to be rolled out in the U.S. as well.

The virtual fitting process is user-friendly. When requesting clothing suggestions, ChatGPT will present a “Try on” button next to the recommended items. Upon clicking it, users can either take a selfie or select an image from their gallery, followed by uploading a full-body photo. Using the ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, the AI will generate an image showing how the selected clothing might appear on the user.

This model offers realistic results with improved lighting, textures, and detail preservation compared to earlier versions.

Moreover, users are not confined to suggested clothing. For example, uploading a link to a coat allows the tool to simulate how it looks on the user. Users can also provide an outfit photo, and ChatGPT will find similar items, making it more versatile than just an AI dressing room. It aids in finding styles, offers purchasable options, and displays how they may look when worn.

However, as with all AI technologies, inaccuracies may occur. The virtual images might not fully represent the clothing or the user, and accurate size fitting cannot be guaranteed. Purchasers are advised to verify the merchant’s details, including measurements and return policies, before finalizing a transaction.

Privacy is also a consideration. Reference images uploaded for try-ons are stored within the app’s settings, allowing users to revisit or delete them if desired, through the path: Settings > Personalization > Reference photos.
