The Microsoft co-founder emphasized the risk posed by malicious individuals utilizing AI technology.
In light of recent discussions among top AI executives regarding the need to slow the pace of AI advancements, Bill Gates has expressed his support for these calls and the necessity for enhanced regulation and safeguards. In an interview on NBC News’ Meet the Press, the co-founder of Microsoft remarked, “It’s completely irresponsible not to require every AI to have these safeguards and monitoring capabilities.” In line with this, AI firm Anthropic has enlisted Accenture as an independent evaluator for its latest AI systems.
California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, has also proposed a “kill switch” as part of a broader strategy to manage AI’s rapid development. When questioned about this concept, Gates stated, “I would never want to say that I’m against a kill switch,” but cautioned that this measure wouldn’t sufficiently address a more pressing issue. He emphasized that the greater concern lies in the potential use of AI by malicious actors to facilitate bioterrorism or large-scale financial fraud.
“The most dangerous thing we’re facing right now is people with bad intent using AI,” Gates noted during his interview. “There’s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools.”
Regarding legislation, Gates advocated for law enforcement and policymakers to engage in discussions about the necessary safeguards and monitoring that should be adopted by AI firms. He acknowledged that implementing such measures would add some regulatory burden to the industry but insisted it would not lead to a significant slowdown in their progress.
