Beyond Gemini and ChatGPT: 5 Remarkable AI Tools I Rely On

Joe Maring / Source

When considering artificial intelligence, what’s your initial thought? Many people think of chatbots powered by models like GPT, Gemini Pro, and Opus. I personally utilize both Gemini and Claude, but they aren’t the only options available.

Chatbots are indeed versatile tools, yet there are moments when a more specialized solution is necessary. With that in mind, let’s explore a few AI tools that I frequently use and can confidently recommend.

Do you use any AI tools beyond chatbots?

Google NotebookLM

Apart from my role at Source, I’m involved in multiple writing projects including a non-fiction book. For research and organizing my thoughts, I rely on NotebookLM. Although I’ve tried out similar tools, NotebookLM remains my top choice.

One major advantage is that it avoids creating false information, as it draws only from the data you provide, which can include PDFs, Google Docs, Slides, website links, and YouTube videos.

NotebookLM excels in its Audio Overviews feature, which converts your uploaded data into conversational formats like podcasts. This makes it a convenient way to share ideas or to experience your data in a different, perhaps more inspiring manner.

If you’re not keen on Gemini, consider OpenNotebook. While it’s a relatively newer option for me, it operates similarly with a few distinct differences. Its audio summaries are shorter and less detailed and it supports a broader range of AI models from various providers.

Midjourney

While Gemini is capable of generating simple visuals, I prefer the dedicated capabilities of Midjourney. This tool produces images and videos of much higher quality and offers more customization options, including inpainting tools that allow you to modify parts of an image while preserving the rest.

I often use it for creative projects like designing custom children’s books and temporary art for game development platforms. The subscription fees start at $10, varying according to your needs.

Claude Code

Claude Code

Claude Code is a coding assistant powered by AI and designed to run in your terminal or IDE. As I have been trying to brush up on my coding skills after a hiatus, it has proven to be extremely useful.

Its setup is straightforward, with several usage options available. Recently, I utilized it to develop an Android app based on a personal project I envisioned for household management.

Though I encountered some bugs along the way, I was able to develop a functional version of my app in about an hour, an endeavor that would have taken significantly longer without Claude Code’s assistance.

I look forward to exploring more features with Claude Code, and although my experience has only been brief, I can see this tool becoming increasingly valuable in my work.

Flourish

Flourish is an AI-based mental health and wellness assistant, setting it apart from most other tools mentioned. While I would recommend traditional therapy over AI support, Flourish can complement this by helping you monitor your emotions and gain insights.

I’ve been using Flourish daily for about a month, and it has been an effective way to manage my thoughts and nutritional input, surpassing the experiences I typically have with chatbots. The AI is loaded with features while remaining user-friendly, and its assistant feels like a genuine conversational partner, unlike many chatbots.

Perplexity

Perplexity is an AI-driven search engine and research tool that uses the web to provide comprehensive answers complete with citations. You may wonder how it differs from standard chatbots.

While Perplexity can appear similar to any general chatbot with its conversational interface, it distinguishes itself by diving deeper into online sources and presenting specific places you can explore for answers.

While Gemini, Claude, and others handle basic searches and citations, Perplexity excels in providing context and specific references, akin to a true search engine.

As a colleague suggested, Perplexity does have its limitations and might not fully replace a search engine like Google. Nevertheless, for conversational search, it serves as a compelling alternative.
