Choose the HDMI Cable Speed That Fits Your Setup
The best way to shop is according to cable category rather than version number. The HDMI Licensing Administrator does not permit brands to use version numbers in their labeling or marketing. Instead, you should refer to official categories: Premium High Speed HDMI cables are certified for transmission up to 18Gbps, Ultra High Speed HDMI cables support up to 48Gbps, and Ultra96 HDMI cables can handle up to 96Gbps.
In most cases, opting for the fastest cable isn’t necessary. For casual video streaming, a Premium High Speed HDMI cable’s 18Gbps is sufficient for practically all 4K services. Gaming tends to place higher demands, and 4K/120Hz can be achieved with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable connected to one of the top gaming televisions.
Ultra96 (or HDMI 2.2) is the latest cable category and is essential only in rare instances where your hardware requires more than 48Gbps. This is applicable for specialized formats, including uncompressed 4K at 240Hz and 8K at 60Hz. Ultra96 devices might support bandwidths of 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps, necessitating an Ultra96 cable for these capabilities. If your setup operates within 48Gbps, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable suffices.
Instead of focusing solely on price or brand name, ensure you look for the official certification label on the HDMI cable packaging. Each Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 cable must pass certification testing, and the QR code on the packaging allows you to confirm brand, model, and length details.
Investing More May Be Justified for Longer HDMI Runs
The length of an HDMI cable is another key factor influencing its price, and there is no definitive cutoff at 10 or 15 feet.
