Apple’s CEO: We’re Not Interested in AI for AI’s Own Sake

In a recent discussion with Wired’s Steven Levy, Apple CEO John Ternus addressed the company’s stance in the realm of artificial intelligence.

In recent years, there has been a narrative that Apple is lagging in AI advancements, particularly with the postponed release of a revamped Siri, which finally debuted this summer. Ternus, who officially took over as CEO in September and has been with Apple for many years, recognized that “everyone has an opinion,” but maintained, “I really like where we’re at.”

Ternus emphasized that Apple is “definitely going to utilize AI” in its upcoming products, adding, “Our goal isn’t to release AI just for the sake of it. When we execute effectively, people shouldn’t have to distinguish between whether an AI component or traditional software was behind a feature. What truly matters is whether we created something they genuinely appreciate.”

When asked by Levy if AI could potentially revolutionize Apple and its ecosystem, possibly making apps obsolete, Ternus responded, “That could simplify things considerably, but designing products is a deeply human and personal endeavor—something we truly enjoy.”
