Apple Introduces Age Restrictions for Dating Apps: What You Need to Know

This will also apply to applications that facilitate AI relationships.

Apple is set to increase scrutiny on app developers regarding the age ratings of their applications. The company will implement new content descriptor questions within App Store Connect, its online management tool for developers. One of the descriptors will require developers to indicate if their app shares a user’s real-world location with others. Additionally, they will need to disclose if their app includes features that facilitate romantic interactions among real users or virtual companions that involve sexual or romantic themes.

Applications identified as having dating or relationship-focused content will automatically receive an age rating of 18+, preventing access for anyone under 18 if parental controls are activated. Should underage users attempt to download these apps, they will need to provide verification of their age to Apple. While apps that share users’ locations will generally not be impacted by these age restrictions, certain regions, like Brazil, mandate a minimum age rating of 16 for such applications.

The new descriptor questions will be accessible on the management platform starting November 16. Developers must respond to both inquiries when submitting new apps or updating existing ones. Furthermore, by January 12, 2027, all existing applications must have these questions answered.
