Why Some iPhone Calls Lack a Decline Button: The Surprising Explanation

The incoming call screen on your iPhone is easier to understand than you might think.

We’ve all experienced the inconvenience of our iPhone ringing at inopportune times, only to find there’s no option to decline the call. It’s frustrating, especially when you’re used to seeing a decline option. The answer is straightforward: when your iPhone is locked, it only shows the “slide to answer” feature. However, once it’s unlocked, you’ll see both the accept and decline options.

Depending on your settings, these buttons may appear in a compact banner or take up the entire screen, but rest assured both options are available. Nothing is disabled; this is simply the default functioning of an iPhone. The good news is you can customize these settings in the app’s preferences.

You don’t solely rely on the on-screen button to handle incoming calls. Pressing the side button twice quickly will decline the call and send the caller directly to voicemail. Alternatively, you can silence the ringing by pressing either of the volume buttons, whether your iPhone is locked or unlocked.

How to respond to an iPhone call without answering it

If you quickly decline a ringing call with the side button, the caller will likely recognize that their call was rejected. Fortunately, you can inform them about why you couldn’t pick up the call. Your iPhone allows you to send a message instead of answering with the Message option during an incoming call interface. You can choose from several preset replies or create a custom response.

If a call banner appears while you’re engaged with something else, tap it to see more options, then select Message. You can pick a preset response or opt for Custom to type your own message. This way, you can provide the caller with context for why they were sent to voicemail.

Additionally, you can modify the preset replies ahead of time. Go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Respond with Text to select and edit responses. For instance, use responses like “I’m working now” or “Please text me; I’m busy,” which convey your situation concisely. Setting this up requires just a few moments.

How to block unwanted calls on an iPhone

Despite regulations like the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, many of us face persistent telemarketers, spam, and robocalls, with 2.6 million complaints reported to the federal authorities in 2025 alone. Some callers are quite relentless, resorting to different numbers even after being blocked. However, blocking calls is worthwhile. You can find the rejected number in your Recents, tap on it (or the Info button), scroll down, choose Block Caller, and confirm the action.

For a broader approach, you can set your phone to screen unknown numbers. Navigate to Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers (for iOS 26 and newer). Here, you have options: Never, Ask Reason for Calling, or Silence. The middle option can be handy in case you miss an important call from someone unknown.

Opting for Silence means unknown calls will go straight to voicemail without ringing. However, it’s good to remember that unknown numbers could be from someone important, so balancing convenience and precaution is key.
