Overview
- The release of Android Auto 17.4 addresses a bug causing connection issues for some smartphones and vehicle systems.
- This problem impacted both wired and wireless connections, with prior updates (17.2 and 17.3) failing to resolve it for some users.
- A separate connectivity issue related to Pixel 10 devices and specific VW Group cars has also been resolved via a software update from the manufacturer.
Have Android Auto users been facing incessant issues? It seems like new glitches arise frequently, causing persistent frustration. However, there’s positive news today, as Google is rolling out a significant fix.
Google has resolved a major bug that resulted in some users experiencing frequent connection drops with Android Auto. This issue was evident in versions 17.1, and persisted through updates 17.2 and 17.3, affecting both wired and wireless setups across certain vehicles. The latest version, Android Auto 17.4, offers a solution.
A representative from Google’s community confirmed the resolution earlier this week and urged users facing this dilemma to update to the latest version of the app. Affected individuals reported that audio would halt abruptly, followed by a frozen display and subsequent connection loss.

Users encountering this issue found that interruptions occurred after about three minutes, especially when using an aftermarket head unit. This applied whether Android Auto was connected through USB or wirelessly. Downgrading to previous versions provided improved stability, but most users prefer not to revert to outdated software. Reports indicated that the glitch affected multiple Pixel and Samsung models, though not all vehicles or receivers experienced the same trouble.
Additionally, Google has addressed another connectivity concern; however, this will require input from car manufacturers rather than just an app update. This issue primarily affected Pixel 10 users pairing with VW Group vehicles such as Škoda, Volkswagen, and SEAT.
According to Google, the root cause lay within the head unit of the car, and a corresponding fix is now available from manufacturers. Drivers are advised to check with their dealerships for the latest software updates.

This process may not be as straightforward as updating an app, as dealerships may lack knowledge about which firmware includes the fix. An over-the-air update would certainly simplify the process for compatible cars. However, the fixes mainly focus on connection reliability rather than addressing the feature gaps that some users desire.
The Android Auto 17.4 update is currently being rolled out, but the distribution is gradual, so users should check the Play Store for the latest version.
